Damaged roofs, downed trees, missing shingles, and loss of power are among the many things that churches and ministries in the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida are experiencing in the wake of Hurricane Irma this week.
The diocese on Thursday released its damage report for its 90 churches and affiliated ministries. Loss of power, roof damage, and downed trees were the three most common issues facing parishes.
Volunteers for clean-up, property restoration, and more are welcome at all churches. Please contact the appropriate rector or person in charge for more information.
Here is the report (cities in alphabetical order):
- Holy Spirit, Apopka: Minor damage, tree down.
- Alban’s, Auburndale: Lost awning and playground set, limbs, etc.
- Camp Wingmann, Avon Park: Lakefront building severely damaged, lost dock, roof damage to retreat house, porch on rector damaged.
- Holy Trinity, Bartow: Trees damaged narthex, poked hole and damaged A/C duct.
- Mary’s, Belleview: Trees down.
- Francis, Bushnell: Minor damage.
- Matthias, Clermont: Minor damage, lost a few shingles.
- David’s, Cocoa Beach: Water intrusion, minor damage.
- Mark’s, Cocoa: Minor damage.
- Anne’s, Crystal River: Siding damage, some water intrusion.
- Barnabas, DeLand: Partial power (church has power, but middle school building does not), debris.
- Advent, Dunnellon: Some power outage.
- Holy Faith, Dunnellon: Leaking through caulking.
- All Saints’, Enterprise; Lost gutter, and debris.
- Thomas, Eustis: Power lost, but restored Sept. 13.
- Simon the Cyrenian, Fort Pierce: Minor water intrusion.
- Holy Trinity, Fruitland Park: Minor roof damage, leak, debris.
- Mark’s, Haines City: Minor damage, limbs down.
- Margaret’s, Inverness: No significant damage,
- San Juan, Kissimmee: Wind damage to fencing and gazebos, loss of many shingles.
- John’s, Kissimmee: Wind damage to fencing and gazebos, loss of many shingles.
- Francis of Assisi, Lake Placid: Minimal damage to church, more damage to thrift store.
- Good Shepherd, Lake Wales: Minor leaks, a few lost shingles,
- Christ the King, Lakeland: Trees down, but no structural damage,
- David’s, Lakeland: Trees down, but no significant damage.
- Stephen’s, Lakeland: A lot of trees down, temporary signage destroyed.
- Shepherd of the Hills, Lecanto: Minor soffit damage.
- James, Leesburg: No significant damage.
- Christ Church, Longwood: No power, tree branches, debris.
- Resurrection, Longwood: Trees down on school roof, awning down.
- Good Shepherd, Maitland: More roof damage than originally thought, many shingles down on several buildings, particularly the roof line on the parish hall and school building, trees down.
- Minor siding damage and water blown in.
- Holy Trinity, Melbourne: Major water intrusion.
- Hope Church, Melbourne: No significant damage.
- John’s, Melbourne: No significant damage.
- Luke’s, Merritt Island: No power, water, or phone as of Sept. 13.
- Edward’s, Mount Dora: No structural damage, tree limbs down and debris, palm tree in the church pool, no power.
- Paul’s, New Smyrna Beach: No power, minor damage.
- Peter the Fisherman, New Smyrna Beach: No power.
- Grace, Ocala: Roof damage, flooding.
- Patrick’s-Gateway to Hope, Ocala: Debris, but no structural damage,
- Corpus Christi, Okahumpka: Water and roof damage.
- Our Saviour, Okeechobee: Debris, but no structural damage.
- Ascension, Orlando: Minor damage – lost a skylight.
- Christ the King, Orlando: No power.
- Emmanuel, Orlando: No power.
- Jesus de Nazaret, Orlando: No power.
- San Cristobal, Orlando: Water damage in sanctuary, roof shingles missing, shed in back has hole in roof, no AC, sign destroyed, and big tree down and resting against parish facility.
- Matthew’s, Orlando: Lots of roof leaks (approximately $8 to $10K worth or repair), lost pavilion roof, awning and some of the soffit, massive septic issues which might resolve itself as water recedes.
- Michael’s, Orlando: Tree is against back of Quigley Parish Hall, tree scheduled to be cut on Sept. 13, approximate 5-inch puncture in roof of Quigley Hall, no power, no internet.
- James, Ormond Beach: Minor damage, lost a lot of shingles.
- Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center, Oviedo: Trees down, no major damage.
- Grace, Port Orange: No significant damage.
- Holy Faith, Port St. Lucie: No structural damage, debris, and tree branches down throughout the property.
- Nativity, Port St. Lucie: No significant damage.
- Luke & St. Peter, St. Cloud: Debris, but no structural damage.
- Holy Cross, Sanford: Additional roof damage, trees down, debris.
- Agnes, Sebring: Major structural and water damage, e.g. roof panels peeled back.
- George, The Villages: No significant damage.
- Gabriel’s, Titusville: Church and food pantries are without power.
- Augustine of Canterbury, Vero Beach: No significant damage.
- Church of the Messiah, Winter Garden: Minor leaks, limbs, and debris.
- Holy Cross, Winter Haven: Damage to roof and facia, missing shingles, cracked window leaks, debris.
- Paul’s, Winter Haven: Debris, no power.
- Richard’s, Winter Park: No power, trees down, including one on power line in rear of property, debris, more
