The Diocese of Central Florida will be celebrating the new ministry of the Rev. Cameron MacMillan and his expansive ministry goals on Sunday, July 29 at 4 p.m., when he is officially installed as rector at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Maitland.

Bishop Greg Brewer will preach and lead the celebration; clergy are asked to wear red stoles. A reception will be held after the celebration, which will rejoice in MacMillan’s goals for the Greater Orlando parish.

MacMillan said one of his goals is to oversee the expansion of two of the church’s big ministries: the special needs school, and the Good Shepherd Academy in South Sudan, which has been supported by Church of Good Shepherd for the last two years.

“My goal is simple: Make Good Shepherd a place of discipleship for all people of all ages,” said MacMillan, who follows the Rev. Sarah Bronos as rector. “I’m excited to celebrate the ministry of Good Shepherd at this point in its history. The congregation here is full of people who want to serve Jesus and see His Kingdom expand in our community.

“I’m personally excited about getting the church more actively engaged with biblical education through our Sunday morning Christian Formation series and through our small group Bible studies that are led by knowledgeable and prayerful leaders,” MacMillan said.

For MacMillan, some of his ministries already are in full gear, and he’s excited about watching them grow. “There are two big ministries here that are starting to expand,” MacMillan said. “Good Shepherd is the site of a special needs school, and we are seeking to engage the families and get them involved with church. Many families whose children have special needs do not attend worship services because they feel unwelcome.

“We want to be a place where that is not the case,” MacMillan said. “We’re also getting involved with the greater special needs community in central Florida by hosting big events in our parish hall, free of charge. This has been a venue for engagement between the church and the world.

“The other ministry that is growing is our connection to Good Shepherd Academy in South Sudan,” MacMillan said. “We’ve been supporting them for two years, and we just had Father John Daau as a guest last weekend. He and his wife started and continue to run a school for children in South Sudan where over 75 percent of the population is illiterate (over 95 percent for females). Because of his visit, our partnership has strengthened both spiritually and financially.”

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 331 Lake Avenue in Maitland, just seven miles from downtown Orlando.
