Hundreds of get-well cards and well-wishes poured in for the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop, in the aftermath of his surgery in late July for prostate cancer.
Some six weeks later, Bishop Curry is still gushing over the worldwide concern for his welfare as he resumes work. “I want to thank you for all of the cards, and the well-wishes and, above all, for all of the prayers,” Curry said in a video message posted on Facebook. “I came through the surgery very well. Everything is good. The pathology report was just fine, and I’m slowly but surely working my way back into the work I love to do.”
Curry’s return to work is good news for Episcopalians, especially those in the Diocese of Central Florida. Curry will be the special guest preacher at the Diocese’s 50th Annual Convention on Feb. 1-2, 2019.
He recently spoke in Atlanta at a jam-packed benefit dinner for the Day1 media ministry, and was specially recognized by the Atlanta City Council, according to an Episcopal News Service news release.
Curry gained worldwide fame in mid-May when he delivered the sermon at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Subsequently, it was announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer during a recent annual exam. He had surgery on July 31.
Curry also made headlines in July at the General Convention of The Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, when he watched a resolution on same-sex marriage pass both the House of Deputies and House of Bishops, and the Diocese of Cuba get readmitted to the Church for the first time since 1957. The Diocese of Cuba delegation received a standing ovation at the convention.
