Third Sunday of Advent
Gospel: Luke 3:7-18
What then should we do? The audience listening to John’s discourse on repentance asked him this question three times, according to the Gospel of Luke 3:10-14. First the crowd, then the tax collectors, finally the soldiers. It seems an easy question for an easy answer, but the question and answer are much complicated.
John responded to their question by inviting them to repent, to turn away from their sins and to turn to God. He encouraged the crowd to share with those in need, the tax collectors not to collect more than what was required, and the soldiers not to extort money or accuse people falsely. These answers still apply to us today in preparation for the arrival of our Savior. We are encouraged to repent, to share with those in need, to gather only what is required of us, to not extort our brothers and sister, and not to accuse people falsely. All these can be summarized in one word, love.
Therefore, what should we do while we prepare for the second coming of Jesus? On this third Sunday in Advent, the Church is invited to continue its preparation through repentance, to be in good relationship with our neighbor, and to return to the Lord.
Advent is also an occasion to prepare the community around us for the coming of Jesus by inviting a friend to meet the Lord, and by organizing joyful and festive worships. It invites us to spend time in prayer and joyful preparation, knowing that our day to be with Jesus is around the corner.
Advent is a time to shout, to make a joyful noise to the Lord as we prepare our hearts and our community to receive our Savior. We are encouraged to make our worship to God a celebration, a parade, a festive occasion knowing that the day of the coming of Jesus is near.
