St. Richard’s Episcopal Church in Winter Park will wrap up its discussion of “The Evolution of Judaism” on Sunday, May 27, when its adult education class examines the Book of Daniel and other writings. All classes begin at 9:30 a.m. in the church’s Parish Hall.
The Book of Daniel discussion is the fourth of four talks about “The Evolution of Judaism” in the month of May. “The Evolution of Judaism” covers books of the Bible that were written between the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the temple at the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (440 BCE) and the conquest of Jerusalem by Pompey (63 BCE), a military and political leader of the late Roman Republic, according to the church’s news release.
“The Evolution of Judaism” began on May 6 with an examination of the Book of Jonah. The adult education class then studied the perils of Esther and her uncle Mordecai on May 13. Quizzically, the Book of Esther is one of only two books in the Hebrew Bible that does not mention God by name, with the Song of Songs being the other.
The third discussion covered 1 and 2 Maccabees, found in the Apocrypha, which is a group of apocryphal ancient books located in a separate area between the Old and New Testaments or as an appendix following the New Testament in some Christian Bibles.
This Sunday, participants will investigate the Book of Daniel as well as some additions from the Apocrypha. Some Christians believe that the Book of Daniel discloses predictions of the future.
Adult education classes are held between celebrations of Holy Eucharist at 8 and 10:30 a.m. For more information, call the church at 407-671-4211.
