Children enjoy the bounce house that Camp Wingmann leaders set up last fall during a special introductory visit to Church of Our Saviour in Okeechobee. A family caravan from the church will visit Wingmann for a tour in May.

Church of Our Saviour in Okeechobee will be checking out the fun at Camp Wingmann on Saturday, May 4, when a family caravan makes the trek to Avon Park.

Deacon Kay Mueller on Tuesday, April 2, announced that multiple families will be driving to the popular youth retreat for a special tour of the facilities and more. The idea was first explored last fall when Church of Our Saviour leaders were looking for a way to introduce some of its youth to Wingmann’s facility. Wingmann management and staff got the ball rolling last November when they came to the church to talk about the retreat.

Additionally, a Church of Our Saviour parishioner sponsored a bounce house and a snow cone machine for the children to enjoy, and the church’s vestry hosted a cookout for families and the Wingmann staff.

The introductory event held last fall was a success. As a result, Camp Wingmann agreed to host Church of Our Saviour families from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., May 4. The special tour is being hosted to help Church of Our Saviour families feel more comfortable about sending their children to the retreat’s popular summer camps.

“They’ll do a tour of the facility, have a shared lunch, family Bible study, and have a couple of activities,” Mueller said.

The church began preparations for the May tour by holding a fish fry fundraiser on March 29 at Church of Our Saviour. Proceeds will be used to help award scholarships to youth to attend summer camp.

Additionally, the May tour is following one of the objectives of Bishop Greg Brewer, who long has preached the importance of reaching out into our communities to include all who might not be aware of the opportunities God has placed “in our own backyards.”
