West Palm Beach’s Virginia Mims, a rising soprano in the world of opera, will put on a concert Jan. 5, 2018 at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach.

One of the nation’s rising sopranos in the world of opera will be coming to a church in the Diocese of Central Florida in early January.

Virginia Mims, the daughter of Grammy Award-winning Marilyn Mims, will put on a concert at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at St. James Episcopal Church, 38 S. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach. The concert will feature favorite arias and classical art songs, as well as a selection of Broadway songs. The concert is open to the public and free of charge, however, donations will be accepted.

A West Palm Beach native, Virginia is continuing the legacy of the Bel Canto tradition. Her mother performed regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s, according to Wikipedia. Marilyn, who currently is a professor of voice at Palm Beach Atlantic University, won the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording when she sang the role of Ortlinde on the Met’s 1990 recording of Die Walküre.

Two years ago, Virginia took first place in the high school division of the Classical Singer competition, according to the fromthetop.org website.
