Easter and beyond at the Cathedral

For Lent and Easter, I was involved, as usual, in the Holy Week Easter Services at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke. It was wonderful. Easter Sunday morning they had over 1,000 people in church, with folding chairs at the second service, and it was glorious.

There’s also a new service at the Cathedral at 6 p.m. which is far more informal and contemporary in nature. It’s really sort of the brainchild of Canon Justin Holcomb and some others who’ve been trying to pioneer this. It has grown quickly from a handful of people to attendance in the forties. The trajectory is definitely upward.

On Easter Sunday morning, I confirm at 7:30 and you know people want to show up for all the pageantry. Just about all of the regulars were there and we put our heads together asking if we should cancel the 6 p.m. service. Decided, no, let’s keep going, and when we got there that night, there were 35 people, only five of whom had been to that service before, and the majority of whom had never visited the Cathedral. Who knows? This can be in some places a real harvest time.
